The Unlikely Hero of Negril
Lighthee, a dedicated and passionate animal lover, has made a significant impact on the lives of animals in Negril, Jamaica. Her tireless efforts to improve the lives of animals in the community have earned her a prestigious award.
A Community in Need
Negril, a small coastal town in Jamaica, has long struggled with a lack of veterinary care. The town has never had a veterinarian, leaving animals without access to proper medical care. This has resulted in a significant number of animals suffering from preventable diseases and injuries.
Lighthee’s Journey
Lighthee’s journey began when she started volunteering at a local animal shelter.
The Journey Begins
Lightheart returned to Kingston to help her colleagues with spaying and neutering of 418 animals. Journeying the long four-hour drive to Kingston from Westmoreland to collect the award was a first for her in some 22 years. She was excited to be a part of this initiative and to contribute to the community’s efforts to reduce animal overpopulation. The drive was not without its challenges, however. Lightheart faced a number of obstacles, including heavy traffic and road closures due to weather conditions. Despite these challenges, Lightheart persevered and arrived at the destination, ready to begin her work.*
The Spaying and Neutering Process
Once Lightheart arrived in Kingston, she began the process of spaying and neutering the animals.
She started a charity, “The Lighthouse,” which focuses on rescuing stray animals and providing them with food, shelter, and medical care. She also started a program to educate the local community about the importance of spaying and neutering pets.
The Birth of The Lighthouse
Lightheart, a seasoned security expert, had always been drawn to helping others. Her journey to Negril began with volunteering with a local charity group, where she quickly discovered her passion for animal welfare. However, it was the arrival of the International Spay and Neuter Network that truly sparked her desire to make a difference.

The Initial Response
When the owner reached out to the Jamaica Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) for help, she was met with a disappointing response. “I reached out to Pamela [Neita-Lawson] at the JSPCA in Kingston and begged her to help me find a veterinarian, which was not possible,” she said. “I was told that the dog was a stray and that the JSPCA had no resources to care for it.”
