Real ropeway cable, structural, and drive-system design is governed by ropeway safety codes (such as EN 12929 or equivalent national standards) and must be performed and certified by a qualified engineer. Results Are Rounded, Simplified Estimates
The tools apply standard engineering formulas — the parabolic shallow-sag approximation for cable sag, a steady-speed force balance for funicular haul, headway arithmetic for throughput — and round their output for readability. That rounding, together with the assumptions of each deliberately simple model (no temperature effects, no ice or wind loading, no acceleration or braking forces, no safety factors), means a displayed value will differ from a full engineering analysis. Always work to full precision, with the applicable safety margins, when a real application requires it.
Why a Result May Look Off
A calculator can return a surprising or blank answer when:
- Units are mismatched: mixing meters with feet, or kilograms with pounds, changes the answer entirely.
- Inputs describe an impossible or unphysical system:for example, an incline angle at or above 90°, or a car spacing shorter than the cars themselves.
- A value is out of range: a negative mass, a zero span, or a load factor above 100% has no meaningful result.
- The approximation has broken down: the shallow-sag cable formulas lose accuracy once sag becomes a large fraction of the span, which the sag and rope-length tools flag when relevant.
